Closing the Gender Gap in Computer Science: Empowering Girls in Vietnam

By Marta Rosa Spiga

As the world becomes increasingly technology-driven, the demand for skilled professionals in computer science continues to soar. However, there is a concerning gender disparity in this field, not only in Vietnam but in many other countries as well. Despite a growing number of girls showing interest in studying computer science, they remain underrepresented in IT-related courses and careers. This disparity can be attributed to societal norms, stereotypes, and cultural factors that influence perceptions about gender roles and career choices, often steering girls away from technology-related fields considered traditionally more "suitable" for women.

The challenges faced by women aspiring to start an IT career in Vietnam are multifaceted. Some female students encounter stereotypes or bias in the classroom or workplace, impacting their confidence and sense of belonging. Additionally, the lack of visible female role models in the technology industry may discourage many girls from pursuing computer science, as they may feel underrepresented and unsupported.

Balancing family and career responsibilities can also be a significant challenge for women in any profession, including computer science. In certain regions or communities, access to quality computer science education and resources may be limited, hindering girls' opportunities to explore their interests and potential in the field.

Despite these obstacles, there is hope on the horizon. Initiatives aimed at promoting female participation in computer science are gaining momentum. One such initiative is the collaboration between E-ducare, an Irish charity that provides access to education for vulnerable children in Vietnam and Tanzania, and NearForm, a leading open-source company. Together, they have created online classes in English, providing children with a strong foundation in coding knowledge.

The inaugural session of "Coding for Kids" took place at the Community Learning Center in Ngoc Bai Village, Quoc Oai district, located on the outskirts of Hanoi. Even though many children from E-ducare do not have personal laptops, their enthusiasm for the course remains undeterred. This includes inspiring young minds like Iris (nickname), an 11-year-old girl who tragically lost her father at a tender age. Despite facing adversity, Iris aspires to become a developer. Throughout the lessons, she has been highly engaged, displaying immense interest and exceptional performance.

The success of these initiatives can be seen in the transformation of young lives. During interviews with the participants, the impact of the computer course was evident. When asked about her experience, Iris mentioned that she learned about the library and computer course from her teacher and expressed her eagerness to continue taking computer classes in the future.

She particularly appreciated the friendly and easy-to-understand teaching methods of the instructors, along with the enthusiastic support from local volunteers. Iris's aspirations shine brightly as she looks forward to becoming a software developer like NearForm's teachers who have been guiding her journey.

However, a significant barrier for Iris and other girls like her is the lack of access to personal computers. When asked about having her own computer, Iris expressed her desire to have one, highlighting its importance for learning, participating in online classes, and practicing her skills. A computer could not only empower her education but also serve as a means of entertainment after school.

As we strive to empower young girls like Iris in their pursuit of computer science, it is crucial to address the gender gap and ensure equal opportunities for all. By providing mentorship, creating role models, and improving access to quality education and resources, we can break down barriers and inspire the next generation of female software developers.

Iris' Project

In conclusion, the journey to closing the gender gap in computer science is both challenging and promising. The dedication of organizations like E-ducare and NearForm, combined with the determination and potential of girls like Iris, offers hope for a future where girls and women can thrive in the technology industry. Together, let's continue to support and empower young minds, enabling them to reach new heights and create a more inclusive and innovative world of technology.
